Based on your understanding of The Prince, what is the basis and genesis of Machiavelli’s politics?
Machiavelli’s Basis & Genisis in “The Prince”
Your essay will be graded on the basis of: (1) whether or not you answer the question posed; (2) the thoughtfulness and logical consistency of the thesis presented; (3) the rigor and precision of the arguments advanced; (4) the degree to which the arguments presented are documented through references, citations and quotations from the text; and (5) grammar, spelling and writing style.
Your essay should be 1,000 words in length – or roughly equivalent to three double-spaced, type-written pages, using one-inch margins and a 12-point font. Footnotes or endnotes are not necessary, but all references to the text must be clearly identified. Papers that do not answer the question, fall short of the 1,000 words minimum, or are too long will be returned with regrets, bearing an automatic grade of “F.”
Please do not use or consult any secondary sources.
NB: Please note the question above is a question, not a prompt.
All essays must be uploaded to Turnitin. You must go to the Tunitin website NOT Blackboard to do this. I will not read or assign a grade to any essay that is not uploaded. The penalty for late papers will apply.
Essay Rules
1. Make sure you actually answer the question posed (not a variation of your own making).
2. The essay should be in standard essay form. This means that it should have an introductory paragraph, a body, and a concluding paragraph.
3. Your essay should have a thesis, and you should give a clear indication in your introductory paragraph as to how you intend to prove it.
4. The questions I will give you are not likely to lend themselves to simple answers. If you finish a question in less than three pages, the chances are very good that you have missed something.
5. The problem is not filling up three pages, but rather, getting everything you need to say into three pages (1,000 words). What I am most interested in is precision of thought and economy of words.
6. I am looking for the tightest and best argued paper you can muster. The space allotted is valuable, so it is a mistake to include thoughts or paragraphs that do not pertain to the topic at hand.
7. Your essay should be a logical, cohesive whole. If you have three different thoughts in three different paragraphs, they ought to bear some relationship to one another.
8. The essay should be your own thought and work, but it should be tied explicitly to the question posed and supported with ample proof from the text. Ample proof, however, does not mean bulk – avoid overly long quotations unless they are crucial to the argument you are making.
9. I am not interested in opinion, your views on irrelevant issues (contemporary or otherwise), or discourses on metaphysical nonsense.
10. Check your spelling and get your facts straight.
11. Use a dictionary.
12. Do not use secondary sources.
13. Make sure you upload your essay to Turnitin.
