Corporate social responsibility is a controversial topic. Some argue that investing in emerging economies greatly facilitates economic development at the base of the global economic pyramid. Others contend that moving jobs to low-cost countries not only abandons CSR for domestic employees and communities in developed economies but also exploits the poor in these countries and destroys the environment.
So, let us begin this weeks discussion with defining CSR and its role in a business. Then, please select an MNE and make up a list of firm’ stakeholders. Examine the current practice of CSR by the selected MNE. Finally, how would you participate in this debate about CSR if you were (1) the CEO of an MNE headquartered in a developed economy, (2) the leader of a labor union in the home country of the MNE mentioned here that is losing a lot of jobs, or (3) the leader of an environmental NGO in the low-cost country in which the MNE invests?
