Portfolio Overview
Your group is working as a team at a local health department to develop a culturally tailored intervention to address health disparities faced by a specific subpopulation in your community. Each team is conducting research on 1) the subpopulation: Los Angeles County homeless individuals 2) the disproportionate health burden they face: mental health 3) current health interventions and strategies addressing this issue in this population, 4) cultural factors. You will present a high-level overview of the information in your report, including your recommendations and reflection.
Provide an overview of your chosen subpopulation (provide information that would help the audience quickly grasp an understanding of who this population is comprised of, where they live, demographic characteristics such as socioeconomic status, insurance status and other factors that are considered to be social determinants of health. You should prioritize local (city: Los Angeles, county: Los Angeles County) statistics, but you may use state or national level statistics as needed. Base your overview on evidence from reputable outside sources (see important details).
Provide an analysis of cultural beliefs, practices, historical traumas and other factors that are important to address in the design of culturally tailored interventions for this subpopulation. Explore cultural strengths and best practices to promote health and prevent disease in this population. Support your analysis with evidence from reputable outside sources. At least 2 sources must be peer-reviewed journal articles.
Write an overview of the health burden experienced by this population (Los Angeles County, Homeless individuals) due to the priority health issue mental health. Explore the disparities they experience compared to other populations (ideally at your city or council level, but use state or national statistics if this is not available). Summarize the risk factors associated with your chosen health issue of mental health. Explain how factors identified in the previous section affect health behaviors and outcomes related to your chosen health issue in mental health. Base your overview on evidence from reputable outside sources. At least 3 sources must be peer-reviewed journal articles.
Write an overview of at least 3 culturally tailored interventions that address this issue in your subpopulation of the Los Angeles County Homeless individuals. Provide a summary of the studies you chose (study population, intervention design) and explain how they influenced health outcomes in your subpopulation. Identify at least 3 strategies (or recommendations for practice) at the local, state, or national level to meet the health needs of this population of homeless individuals in the Los Angeles County. Base your overview on evidence from reputable outside sources. At least 3 sources must be peer-reviewed journal articles.
Based on the evidence your group has reviewed in sections 1-4, provide your recommendation for important factors that an effective, culturally tailored intervention to should address in order to improve health outcomes for your chosen subpopulation.
Reflect on what you have learned from researching this population. To what extent did this process help you to further develop cultural sensitivity (awareness of differences)? How has it informed your approach as future public health professionals in interacting with other racial/ethnic groups with a sense of cultural humility? Be sure to capture differences in opinion, if they occur.
