In his “Letter,” King is attempting to address the criticisms he is receiving from the “white moderates” (or clergymen). His response attempts to show why mere persuasion and working through the system is inadequate. For these reasons, King argues that direct action in the form of non-violence is necessary. For the purposes of this assignment, we will treat the position of these white moderates to be equivalent to Socrates’ position in the Crito.
