In order to be an effective arguer, one must understand how others use argument to engage and persuade others. Using the David Foster Wallace speech available under week two, you will write up a 300 word (about 1-page in length) rhetorical analysis of the speech whereby you address the following:
The problem Wallace is addressing according to your understanding of the speech.
The solution(s) Wallace proposes to solving the problem.
The types of evidence and appeals Wallace uses to engage/persuade the audience. Why do you think various types of evidence and appeals are used? What is the purpose of using various evidence and appeals?
The shifts in Wallace’s tone throughout. Discuss why you think Wallace changes his tone throughout. What is the purpose for doing this?
Your rhetorical analysis must reach the required word count of 300 words, meet the standards of proper English grammar and syntax, and be typed and follow proper MLA document format guidelines. You’ll have an opportunity to try out some of your ideas and thoughts on the speech during a week two forum assignment.
