Media and Popular Culture in China – Choose a media product/event/phenomena/platform/personnel from the realm of Chinese popular culture and analyze it according to at least 3 major themes (major themes: 1. positionality 2. censorship 3. cultural essentialist perspective 4. china’s reintergration into the global capitalist system 5. cultural consumption and lifestyle changes) raised in class in a critical essay. The goal of this essay is essentially to demonstrate that you have achieved the learning objectives of the class:
1. Awareness of self as a producer of knowledge on popular culture and media from China
2. Familiarity with the institutions and dynamics of China’s media systems as they have contributed to China’s nation-building.
3. Ability to discuss the role of commercialized media and cultural industries in the process of legitimation in post-Maoist market reforms
4. Ability to debate cultural politics, social conflicts, and resistance in concrete historical, political, cultural, and socio-economic contexts in reform-era China.
You may want to conduct a case study and relate it to the wider cultural, political-economic, and historical contexts, both domestically and globally.
