For this assignment, you will use the Observatory of Economic Complexity at MIT. The OEC is an excellent resource for understanding the trade relationships between countries.

In a web browser, go to https://atlas.media.mit.edu/en/

Start by clicking “Visualizations” at the top of the page.

In the drop-down menu marked “Country”, select the United States; then press “Build Visualization” at the bottom. This will provide you a visualization of total US exports.

Question 1: Based on these data, in what industries does the US have an advantage over the rest of the world? Why do you think the US might? Use one or more of the theories from the textbook reading to justify your answer.
Now use the OEC to think about absolute and comparative advantage between countries.

In the drop-down menu marked “Partner”, choose “China”; the press “Build Visualization”. This will tell you what the US exports to China (and what China imports from the US).

You can look at the other side of the US-China trade relationship by selecting “Export” from the menu.

Question 2: In which industries do you believe the US has an ABSOLUTE advantage? In which industries does CHINA have and ABSOLUTE advantage? Explain how you came to your conclusion using the OEC data visualization.
Question 3: In which industries do you believe the US has a COMPARATIVE advantage? Explain how you came to your conclusion using the OEC data visualization.
Lastly, use the OEC to think about absolute and comparative advantage of the country you selected for the FDI project, and the nature of its trade relationship with the United States (put your country in the drop-down menu marked “Country” or “Partner”, repeat steps above).

Question 4: In which industries do you believe your country has an ABSOLUTE or COMPARATIVE advantage? Explain how you came to your conclusion using the OEC data visualization.
