In your evaluation essay, you will make judgments about a particular product, business, place, service, or program. You will write your evaluation based on three criteria that you think should be examined when evaluating the ideal or worst topic that you have selected. For example, when evaluating a fine-dining restaurant, you might examine the food, the ambience/atmosphere, the service, the bar options, the prices, etc…
Write a five paragraph essay (minimum 750 words–word count does NOT include Works Cited page) that evaluates an ideal product, service, etc…Use the following organization:
1) Introduction:
Lead-in/Hook: Start with a statement that will get your reader interested in the topic. Also called an attention-getter. Put the topic into context.
Background Info: Include any information (brief) that you think the reader will need to understand your essay and thesis. Make a clear transition to your thesis.
Thesis: The thesis contains: the specific topic + your evaluation of the topic + lists your three criteria.
2) THREE Supporting Paragraphs:
Each supporting paragraph needs a topic sentence that directly addresses one criterion from your thesis; that one criterion should be fully explained. Also, include your judgment about the criterion. Was it met?
Must contain specific support/evidence in whatever form you think is convincing (quotes from sources like Consumer Reports or customer reviews, interviews, articles, personal anecdotes, etc…). When using direct quotes, introduce the quotes with specific source details. Remember the evidence should support your judgment by telling how or why the criteria was met (or not met). You must use at least two outside sources. Cite all sources!
Give Commentary/Analysis of the support that you just used. Don’t assume the reader knows why you use the support or what it means.
3) Conclusion:
Restate the thesis: Don’t just copy and paste the thesis from the introduction; restate it in a new way.
Sums up the main points from each supporting paragraph. No new information.
Reinforces your evaluation to leave reader with a lasting impression and a strong overall judgment.
4) MLA Documentation:
You will need to use in-text documentation by either introducing your source in a signal phrase or using in-text parenthetical documentation. If your signal phrase does not lead me to the correct source, then you still need parenthetical documentation. Beware of floating quotes! Quotes need to be attributed to someone or some article.
You must have a Works Cited page for all sources used in your essay.
