Should Children Stay in Prison?
Although there is some historical precedent for allowing women inmates to keep newborns with them in the institutional setting, very few women’s prisons permit this practice. Overcrowded prisons lack space for children, and the prison environment is a decidedly undesirable environment for children. A few women’s prisons allow women to keep newborns for a brief period. What are your thoughts on this? Should children stay in prison with their mothers for a short time? Why or why not?
