Many children’s stories transcend cultural boundaries with universal themes, while others reflect a culture’s unique elements. First, find a children’s story that can be clearly identified/associated with one culture. Examples include “The Little Engine That Could” from the United States and “Peach Boy” from Japan. Read the story and then write a response paper answering the following questions.
What is the story title and origin?
Summarize the story in a short paragraph.
What cultural dimensions are reflected in the story? How can you tell?
How do the values in the story relate to past and current dominant culture values present in the culture?
