Though the Civil War and 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States, by the beginning of the 20th century, many parts of the South were not terribly far removed from life in 1850. There had been much progress after the war – Black men voted and held elected office, and several laws and constitutional amendments greatly expanded African Americans’ freedom and guaranteed them every right to which white people were entitled. However, much of this progress had been reversed by the early 20th century. What had happened? Your task is to explain how and why people who had secured rights all Americans hold dear had lost many of them, with most of the rest severely curtailed. Who was responsible, and how was it allowed to happen?
You should plan to write a cohesive, formal essay, in which you develop an argument and advance it through making points and using evidence to back them up.
