Detailed instructions to students
This assessment is in three (3) parts, and each part must be completed satisfactorily.
Part 1: Identifying customer information needs
In a roleplay (videorecording), conduct a reference interview to identify your customer’s information needs.
Roleplay scenario
You are a library officer within the TAFE Queensland Library Network (TQLN). A copyright research officer (customer) approaches you for assistance in writing her paper on legislation/ethical issues in the library and information industry. She wants you to conduct some research for her paper and wants the information by 5 pm on that day. Remember, legislation/ethical issues are a broad topic. During the interview, you are to narrow this topic down to the customer’s specific needs. Some relevant topics specific to her needs may be: · Information ethics for 21st-century library professionals · Legal and ethical issues of information service delivery · Copyright in digital material – are changes needed and why? Copyright protection and exceptions that apply to Library & Information Industry · Libraries and censorship – information dilemma for libraries (abiding by Censorship legislation) – OR censorship of information – an industry dilemma protecting the customer versus freedom of information cost and barriers of access to information in the digital era – how much is really free? · Library & Information services response to the privacy of personal information
You will require the cooperation of another person to play the role of your customer. The customer can be a fellow student, friend, family member, work colleague, work supervisor, etc.
DO NOT INTERVIEW YOURSELF. |
Conduct a reference interview to confirm your customer’s information needs:
Part 2: Sourcing and presenting information
Once you have determined the information need of your customer, you need to source and present information that will meet their needs:
Step 1: Search three (3) different databases to source the information.
Step 2: Looking at the bibliographical record from each database, select one (1) article from each one that you think will meet the information needs of your customer. Identify suitable search techniques that will effectively gather the information you require and explain the reason for your selection of these techniques. You then need to explain how the information found met the needs of each customer.
Step 3: For each article, state the names and URLs of each database.
Step 4: For each article, explain the search strategy you used to retrieve your information. Use the strategy manual for each of the three (3) databases to enhance your search strategy, to refine your searches and to identify appropriate information. Provide evidence of each strategy manual used, this can be a screenshot of each manual.
Step 5: For each article, evaluate the selected article for its currency, relevance, authority, accuracy and purpose to the information needs of your customer.
Step 6: For each article, present your information by compiling an annotated bibliography, using the APA 7th ed. referencing style, with an annotation summarising the article and explaining its relevance to your customer. In addition, cover the following:
For those who do not have access to a workplace, find two (2) participants who will play the role of your colleagues.
Use Appendix A – Annotated bibliography to complete steps 3-6.
Submission list:

Appendix B – Literacy Framework
Australian and New Zealand Information Literacy Framework
Principles, standards and practice
Second edition
Editor
Alan Bundy
The Australian and New Zealand information literacy framework is derived, with permission, from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) information literacy competency standards for higher education.
Object of the Australian Library and Information Association
To promote the free flow of information and ideas in the interest of all Australians and a thriving culture, economy and democracy.
Principle
A thriving national and global culture, economy and democracy will be best advanced by people able to recognise their need for information, and identify, locate, access, evaluate and apply the needed information.
Statement
Information literacy is a prerequisite for
Standard one
The information literate person recognises the need for information and determines the nature and extent of the information needed
Standard two
The information literate person finds needed information effectively and efficiently
Standard three
The information literate person critically evaluates information and the information seeking process
Standard four
The information literate person manages information collected or generated
Standard five
The information literate person applies prior and new information to construct new concepts or create new understandings
Standard six
The information literate person uses information with understanding and acknowledges cultural, ethical, economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information.
What we do
The Framework includes principles and standards that provide a basis for assessing information literacy learning. The learning outcomes are necessarily generic. Therefore educators (teachers, librarians, staff developers, learning advisers, trainers, curriculum designers and others) should work together to develop assessment tools and strategies in the context of particular disciplines and workplaces.
Outcomes
It is holistically essential that teachers and librarians function as educational professionals who can engage in educational debate and decision-making processes, influence policy, forge strategic alliances and demonstrate diplomacy. A well planned, supported and strategically aligned professional development program will ensure:
