You are working as a health promotion project coordinator in the pre-planning stages of a project. You are trying to learn more about the landscape of current programming/services related to your health issue of interest or concern in your community. Entities ranging from government and non-governmental organizations, community-based advocacy and social/health service organizations, philanthropic organizations, faith-based groups, and many others, all play a role in working to reduce or eliminate the health problems we are interested in. As part of your initial effort, you need to make contact with several organizations to see if there is interest in collaborating on a grant to develop a health education/promotion campaign. For this assignment, please complete the following:
1. Write an introductory email script identifying yourself, your work and interests, the health problem, why you are contacting them, etc. and ask if they would be willing to collaborate on a grant writing effort to design and build a health program. Develop a list of organizations you would send that email to.
2. Compose a list of 5-8 questions that you would ask in a “scoping interview” of stakeholders (once you’ve identified them). What do you want to know about the organization? The work that they do? The populations they serve? Where are the health education gaps and how might innovations in health education address this? What work needs to be done? Avoid yes or no questions.
3. Write a 2-3 page brainstorming reflection on how you might coordinate existing efforts to address your health issue through collaboration on a new program. The work can build off existing efforts or take a fresh, creative approach that perhaps hasn’t been tried before (you’ll just need to justify this by making the case that current approaches aren’t working). What would you propose as a solution to your health issue? How can you allow for community stakeholders to contribute to the generation of the project idea? How can you get community stakeholders behind this idea? (caution-ask Prof M about this statement)
Format:
Be sure to include any references both in text and as a references cited page. Please format your document to be 1-inch margins all around with 2.0 line spacing, 12-point font.
Grading:
Assignment 1 will be graded based on the following criteria:
1. Email script is cogent and professional with stakeholders identified (5 points).
2. Questions are substantive and useful to your overall effort (i.e. the questions lead to potentially constructive answers) (5 points).
3. Thoughtful reflection with promising ideas for a possible program (5 points).
