Part 1: Case analysis

As a basis for the first part of this assignment, select a leader and an organisation of your choice. Make sure that you select a leader who is publicly known, and about whom you can find and provide reliable information (e.g., interviews, reports).

Critically analyse the role of this leader for the organisation from the perspective of ethics and responsibility. For example you could examine how the leader has influenced diversity, health and wellbeing, motivation, organisational culture, or organisational change. Use at least one leadership theory and one followership theory that we discussed in Organisational Behaviour (OB) to explain how the leader impacts other individuals, groups or the entire organisation.

Conclude your analysis with what you believe we can learn from this leader from the perspective of ethics and responsibility in organisations. These conclusions should be tied to your chosen OB theories and integrate research with management practice.

Throughout your case analysis, discuss current research from the field of OB that aligns with your chosen OB theories. We expect that you cite current empirical research published in scientific journals to support your arguments. In addition, we recommend that you quote selected parts from other sources (e.g., interviews, reports, websites) that provide detailed insights into the leader and the organisation.

Part 2: Evidence-based personal reflections

The second part of the assignment is based on your OB Missions. Choose one of the missions to reflect what you have learned in the OB Module from the perspective of ethics and responsibility in organisations.

We expect that you cite the relevant scientific literature and discuss current research from the field of OB to support your reflections. For example, if you reflect on your teamwork (OB Mission #2), cite current theories and research about teams in organisations. Also use academic sources to explain how you completed the mission and what you learned from it for an ‘evidence-based’ approach to your reflections.

We recommend that you also bring in specific and detailed examples from your own work experience in the past or how you see yourself and your career in the future to illustrate your learning experience in OB.

Expert answer

From an ethical standpoint, it is clear that Jack Welch was an effective leader who helped to shape GE's culture in a positive way. For example, he was a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion, and he also encouraged employees to focus on health and wellbeing. Additionally, Welch was known for his motivational leadership style, which helped to inspire employees and drive organisational change. Overall, Welch's leadership had a positive impact on GE's ethics and responsibility as an organisation. However, it is worth noting that Welch was not without his critics; some have argued that his focus on short-term results led to unethical practices such as cooking the books and manipulating earnings reports. Nevertheless, on balance, it is clear that Welch was a highly effective leader who helped to make GE a more ethical and responsible organisation.
