Option 1: Does democracy require equality of income or wealth? Discuss why democracy might make a country more or less egalitarian?
Option 2: Political scientist Larry Sabato has proposed a new constitutional convention (Links to an external site.). Select any one of his proposed ideas and write a short list of pros and cons for this idea and support your reasoning.
Some people argue that democracy does require equality of income or wealth in order to be effective, while others claim that it is possible for a country to be democratic even if there is a large discrepancy between the richest and poorest members of society.
One argument in favor of equal income or wealth is that it is necessary for people to be able to participate equally in the political process. If some members of society are too poor to afford food or shelter, they will be unable to engage in politics or advocate for their interests. Others argue that it is more important for everyone to have an equal say in the decisions made by the government, regardless of their economic status.
Another argument in favor of equal income or wealth is that it is fairer and more democratic. It is often said that “one person, one vote” is a central principle of democracy, and that all citizens should be treated equally. However, if some people have much more money than others, they can buy more votes and have a greater say in what happens in their country.
