Option 1: Causes of support for populism
Please pick a country of your choice to empirically explore why it has experienced (or has not experienced) growing support for a particular populist party in the past three decades. You may select a theory from the course readings and draw on empirical evidence from your case (e.g. descriptive statistics, official documents) to evaluate its usefulness in understanding populist support.
Option 2: Consequences of support for populism
Please pick a country of your choice to empirically explore how a particular populist party has influenced social policies. You may situate your case in its regional context (Western/Eastern Europe, USA/UK), identify the party’s most important policy influences, and explain this influence by evaluating the usefulness of theories outlined in the course readings.
