Section A: Language Acquisition

1. Researchers such as Gleason et al (1984) have suggested that politeness routines serve important social and linguistic functions for young children. Outline one or two of the arguments for this claim, and briefly discuss some of the problems (if any) that you think it

Brevity and selection will be important in writing your answer. You do not have to address every argument that the authors make, or every criticism of their work. You should choose the ones that you think are particularly important.

In writing your answer, you should refer to the work cited in the question as well as other relevant academic research (between 2-4 other research studies).

Section B: Literacy

This assessment is made up of three different components.

(1) What are the differences between “the phonics approach” and “a whole word approach” to the teaching of reading? With reference to national literacy standards and research on literacy and reading (2-4 research studies), evaluate the approaches [1000 words] and consider their relative value to teachers [400 words].

2) With reference to 2-3 research studies on the influence of technology on reading, evaluate the impact of the use of audiobooks on the acquisition of reading skills and reading comprehension [800 words].

(3) Given the challenging nature of English spelling, children who are learning to spell respond to these challenges in a number of different ways. Look at the following examples (from Kress, 2000: 40, 132 and 190) and referring to literature (2-3 research studies), comment on at least two creative aspects you notice [800 words].
