There are many factors to consider when engaging the populations we serve. We engage our chosen population by providing general discussion , providing counseling, providing advice, and problem solving to name a few. Considering the various reasons we communicate with others, think about the cultural factors that play a role in communication. For example, when engaging someone from an Asian culture, our communication style will be much different than communicating with someone who has an Italian background. Consider the scenario below and then post a thread answering the questions that follow.
A natural disaster occurred in a central part of Asia. Teams are being assembled to assist with aid related to the natural disaster. You have been placed on a team that represents several cultures including Asian, Western, and Europian. A team member from another culture (you choose a culture different from your own) has confided in you some concerns they have with providing aid. Consider the following when engaging the team member:
What are some cultural communication factors to consider when engaging the person who confided in you?
How do you see your role in relationship to processing with the team member (are you engaging as a friend, counselor, other identity)?
What is the outcome you hope to achieve after communicating with the concerned team member?
