Carol and Therese's encounter at the department store is one of the most important scenes in the novel. Carol is often too wrapped up in her own world to really understand what Therese is feeling, and Therese doesn't always know how to express herself clearly. However, they are both able to see the beauty in each other and they share a deep connection that allows them to overcome their differences. In the end, they both realize that they need each other in order to be truly happy.
