Describe how various microcultures are represented in the media. Explain how diversity in the media effects audiences’ perceptions of different microcultures. Include suggestions on how the audience can limit the impact media messages have on their view of microcultures. Use at a minimum five peer reviewed sources to support the claims you make in the presentation.
The media is responsible for creating and perpetuating stereotypes about microcultures. These stereotypes can have a negative effect on the way that members of those microcultures are perceived by the general public.
One example of this is the way that African Americans are often portrayed in the media. African Americans are often shown as being involved in crime, which creates the stereotype that they are more likely to be criminals than members of other groups. This stereotype can lead to increased discrimination and mistrust of African Americans by the general public.
Another example is the way that Muslims are often portrayed in the media. Muslims are often shown as being terrorists, which creates the stereotype that they are more likely to be involved in terrorist activities than members of other groups. This stereotype can lead to increased discrimination and mistrust of Muslims by the general public.
