Describe and discuss the 8 steps in Legislative action.
Legislative action is the process by which laws are created and enacted. The eight steps in this process are:
1. Introduction of a bill: A bill is introduced in either the House of Representatives or the Senate by a member of Congress.
2. Referral to committee: The bill is then referred to a committee for review.
3. Committee hearings: The committee holds hearings on the bill to gather testimony from experts and interested parties.
4. Mark-up: The committee debates and makes changes to the bill.
5. Report to House/Senate: The committee then reports the bill to the full House or Senate.
6. Debate and vote: The House or Senate debates and votes on the bill.
7. Conference committee: If the House and Senate pass different versions of the bill, a conference committee is formed to negotiate a compromise version.
8. Enactment: If the House and Senate both pass the same version of the bill, it is sent to the President for signature. Once signed, it becomes law.
