Michelangelo's marble statue of David is one of the most famous sculptures in the world. The statue depicts the Biblical hero David in a standing pose, with his sling and stone in hand, ready to fight Goliath. The sculpture is life-sized, meaning that it is the same size as a real human being.
The statue was carved from a single piece of marble, and took Michelangelo four years to complete. It was originally commissioned for the Cathedral of Florence, but was later moved to the Accademia Gallery, where it remains on display today.
David is considered one of Michelangelo's greatest works of art, and has been praised for its beauty, lifelike quality, and artistic skill.
