IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing
Review the IOM report, "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," and explore the "Campaign for Action: State Action Coalition" website. In a 1,000-1,250 word paper, discuss the influence the IOM report and state-based action coalitions have had on nursing practice, nursing education, and nursing workforce development, and how they continue to advance the goals for the nursing profession.
Include the following:
In 2010, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) commissioned a landmark report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) on the future of nursing. The IOM Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, at the Institute of Medicine, was charged with producing a report that would make recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.
The committee's work was informed by a review of data and literature on the current state of nursing and health care in the United States, as well as input from a variety of stakeholders. Based on this information, the committee made four key recommendations:
1. Remove barriers to nurses' full participation in transforming healthcare
2. Expand opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse innovative care models
3. Increase nurses' contributions to improving healthcare quality
4. Prepare the nursing workforce to meet the increasing demands of a transforming healthcare system
In order to achieve these recommendations, the committee proposed a number of specific actions, including:
- Increasing investment in nursing education at all levels
- Redesigning health care environments to better support nurses and promote team-based care
- Supporting nurses in their efforts to continue learning and keeping up with advances in health care
- Encouraging greater participation of nurses in policymaking at all levels
- Collecting data and conducting research on the impact of nurses on health care outcomes
The RWJF has committed to working with partners across the country to implement the committee's recommendations and help build a future where nurses are able to play a vital role in improving the health of all Americans.
