Einstein theory of relativity has been put to the test many times and it is the best theory of gravity we have, why do you think the European Research Council decided to give such a large grant to test the theory once more? If the scientists do not find a black hole in the middle of the Milky Way galaxy, do you think the whole theory of relativity has to be discarded or modified? Use what you have learned about scientific theories to answer this question.
As the best theory of gravity we have, Einstein's theory of relativity has been put to the test many times. The most recent and perhaps most definitive test was conducted by the European Research Council, which awarded a grant of over 1 million Euros to test the theory once more.
The reason for the grant is that, despite its many successes, there are still some aspects of the theory that remain untested or only partially tested. For example, one key prediction of the theory is that gravity should cause light to bend as it passes near a massive object such as a star or a black hole. This effect has been observed many times, but never with enough precision to conclusively rule out alternative theories of gravity.
The new experiment, called the Event Horizon Telescope, will use a network of radio telescopes around the world to observe the black hole at the center of our galaxy with unprecedented precision.
