  • George Washington's advertisement about Ona’s escape notes that it “happened without the least provocation.” Would Ona disagree with this claim, and if so, how?
  • The Washington family believed that they were truly benevolent slave owners.  In their minds, they were “noble, caring, and providing for people whom they believed to be incapable of caring for themselves”?  Was that really the case?
  • Describe the relationship between Ona and Martha Washington.  How did they perceive each other, and how did Martha betray that relationship?
  • When Ona ran away, the Washingtons were angry and humiliated, the President in particular.  In chapter twenty, look at this bit: “Runaways reminded Americans that slaves were people, not simply property, even if they worked for the president and were able to wear nice clothes. Ona’s very escape proved that the idea of a ‘benevolent slave owner’ was a lie. Enslavement was never preferable over freedom, even if you got to wear pretty gowns.”  Slaves escaped frequently and Washington certainly could have brought another woman up from Virginia, so why was he so rabidly determined to have Ona captured and returned to him? (Hint: maybe his ego had something to do with it?)

Expert answer

Ona would likely disagree with the claim that her escape happened without provocation. It's possible that she felt she had no other choice but to leave, given the circumstances at the time. It's also worth noting that her decision to run away may have been influenced by the fact that she was about to be sold again. This time, she would have been separated from her children, which would have been an unbearable thought for any mother. Given all this, it's understandable why Ona might have felt that she had to take matters into her own hands and escape slavery, even if it meant putting her life at risk.
