Give a hypothetical example of positive punishment, and a hypothetical example of negative punishment

Expert answer

Positive punishment is defined as a consequence that occurs after a behaviour is displayed, in order to decrease the likelihood of that behaviour being repeated in the future. A hypothetical example of positive punishment would be if a child was misbehaving in class and the teacher gave them detention as a consequence. The hope is that by experiencing the negative consequence of detention, the child will be less likely to misbehave in future.

Negative punishment is defined as the removal of a desired consequence after a behaviour is displayed, in order to decrease the likelihood of that behaviour being repeated in future. A hypothetical example of negative punishment would be if a teenager came home from school and their parent took away their phone because they got a bad grade on their report card. The hope is that by taking away the teenager's desired consequence of using their phone, they will be less likely to get bad grades in future.
