How does abnormal fluid accumulation in the pleural spaces affect lung function? if possible answer at a cellular level. Understanding pathophysiology by Huether, McCance 7th ed. is our textbook
The abnormal fluid accumulation in the pleural spaces can affect lung function by disrupting the normal movement of air and fluid in and out of the lungs. This can lead to a decrease in the amount of oxygen that is able to be absorbed by the blood, and can also cause difficulty breathing. The accumulation of fluid can also lead to inflammation and scarring of the lungs, which can further impair lung function.
Pleural effusions can also put pressure on the heart and great vessels, which can cause problems with heart function. If the effusion is large enough, it can even compress the lungs and make breathing difficult. In some cases, pleural effusions can lead to death.
