The Anthropocene is a relatively new term that refers to the current geological era in which human activity has become the dominant influence on the Earth’s climate and environment. While there are many who argue that the Anthropocene is not a valid concept, it is nevertheless gaining increasing attention as a way of understanding the political economy of climate change.
There are a number of ways in which the Anthropocene can be useful in understanding climate change. Firstly, it emphasises the importance of humans as agents of environmental change. Secondly, it highlights the fact that climate change is not a natural phenomenon, but rather is a product of human activity. And finally, it reminds us that we cannot simply rely on technological solutions to climate change, but must also address the underlying social and economic causes.
