Augustus used Rome's legendary past to legitimize his rule. He claimed that he had restored Rome to its former greatness, and he framed his rule as a restoration of the traditional order. The regime promoted its ideals through its legendary past by depicting the ideal Roman ruler as a model for emulation. Augustus did this by commissioning art and literature that emphasized his heroic deeds and illustrated his virtuous character. In addition, he took measures to physically connect himself to the great figures of Rome's past. For example, he had a statue of Julius Caesar erected in the Forum and he built a temple to the goddess Venus, who was the mother of Aeneas, the legendary founder of Rome.
