Question: How well are hauora Māori principles integrated into the initiative/by the institution?

Task Overview

This assessment aims to discuss and critically analyse a health promotion initiative/strategy/programme/project in your discipline of choice, using hauora Māori principles to assess and evaluate.  This assessment requires you to critique the initiative/institution using the hauora Māori criteria.

A question to consider is: How well are hauora Māori principles integrated into the initiative/by the institution?

This assessment is made up of two parts.  Part A is the 1000-word Critical Analysis.  Part B is the Research Journal that you will keep for Assignment 1 to provide supporting evidence of your sources and how your thinking has developed during this analysis.  I expect no more than a 1000 words maximum

Course Learning Outcomes Assess

Assignment 1 assesses 3 of the 4-course learning outcomes.

1. Critically discuss Māori concepts of health and Māori health promotion.
2. Critically analyse Māori health promotion practice.
4. Present work at the appropriate academic standard.

Time Commitment  

Your work on Assignment 1 is expected to develop weekly while undertaking the assessment tasks in Canvas.  You should expect to spend around 4-5 hours per week working on Assignment 1.  Tasks will include reading, summarising, making notes, sourcing data, reflecting, updating your Research Journal and writing the final Critical Analysis.

Suggested Procedures  

1. Search for an example of a Māori health promotion initiative that resonates with you.
2. Read textbook chapters that are relevant to your promotion and make notes of important concepts.
3. Do a library search and source-related journal articles.
4. Choose a hauora Māori model which is relevant to this initiative.
5. Evaluate the health promotion initiative against Māori health models, values and principles.
6. Go through Te Pae Mahutonga. Analyse the initiative against the criteria contained in your model.  Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the initiative.
7. Make notes of your findings. What impression did you get of the initiative based on your reading of what is important in the ao Māori?
8. Were your expectations met in terms of the visibility of the hauora Māori? Was a Ti Tiriti statement present?  Were there Māori kupu present?  Was a Māori health model apparent? 
9. What does your discipline code of practice expect to be visible?
10. Discuss your thinking and critical analysis of what you have found.
    1. Begin by discussing the relevance of the initiative/institution to hauora Māori.
    2. Next, measure and evaluate the initiative/institution using one of the Māori health models and hauora Māori concepts explored in this paper
       1. Identify the main elements.
       2. Explain your points and give details.
       3. Provide supporting information and examples.
       4. Identify positive and negative aspects.
       5. Explain the different points of view.
       6. Include a discussion of the best practice code for your profession.
       7. Using the literature, provide recommendations for the ao Māori and matauranga Māori to be more present in health promotion.

• The quality of your research journal and notes.
