In what ways has the unfair and unjust treatment of African Americans continued even since the end of slavery?

 

Sometimes people who are not well educated in American history say something like this:

"Slavery ended with the Civil War in 1865 and black people have had the right to vote since the 15th Amendment passed in 1869. It was a long time ago, and besides, it wasn't that bad. It's time to forget about it and move on."

People who think this are wrong in so many ways. Use your knowledge of American history to explain all the holes in their thinking.

Some of the ways in which the unfair and unjust treatment of African Americans has continued even since the end of slavery include:

 

-The disproportionate number of black people who are incarcerated or who live in poverty

-The continuation of racist attitudes and beliefs

-The underfunding of schools in predominantly black neighborhoods

-The denial of affordable housing and homeownership opportunities to black people

-Discriminatory hiring and employment practices

-The lack of access to quality healthcare

 

All of these factors contribute to the overall inequality that still exists in our society today. African Americans continue to be at a disadvantage in many areas, and this is something that needs to be addressed. We need to do better in ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Only then can we truly say that we are living up to our ideals as a nation.
