Expert answer

Chekhov’s ‘Misery’ and ‘A Journey by Cart’ are both examples of short stories that embody the principle of growth. They are both open to human meaning and answerable to that meaning. This is because Chekhov removed the formal plot, which allowed the story structure to grow from within. This principle is evident in ‘Misery’, in which the protagonist, Ivan, goes through a journey of growth and self-discovery. It is also evident in ‘A Journey by Cart’, in which the protagonist, Semyon, goes through a journey of growth and understanding. In both stories, the protagonists start off in a state of misery and end up in a state of understanding. In ‘Misery’, Ivan is miserable because he is poor and uneducated. He is also miserable because he doesn’t know how to read or write. However, by the end of the story, Ivan has learned how to read and write. He has also gained a new understanding of himself and the world around him. In ‘A Journey by Cart’, Semyon is miserable because he is poor and uneducated. He is also miserable because he doesn’t know how to read or write. However, by the end of the story, Semyon has learned how to read and write. He has also gained a new understanding of himself and the world around him. In both stories, the protagonists’ journeys of growth and understanding are made possible by Chekhov’s removal of the formal plot. This is because the formal plot would have restricted the protagonists’ journeys to within the confines of the story. By removing the formal plot, Chekhov allowed the protagonists to journey beyond the boundaries of the story, which made their journeys more open to human meaning and answerable to that meaning.................
