Assessment 1: Universal 8-bit Counter (L1, L3)

Problem Statement:

We want to design a universal 8-bit counter that can perform the following functions:

    1. Count up or down selected by a toggle switch,
    2. Restart counting when the reset button is pressed,
    3. The start and stop point can be set using two sets of 8-bit dip switches.

Objectives:

1- Create the system block diagram with all main blocks included (8%) 2- Describe the function of each block in the diagram (7%)

  1. Design the circuit and create the schematic in the simulation software:
    1. Use proper type of logic gates and wire connection to complete the circuit (20%)
    2. Comment the schematic (5%)
    3. Use hierarchy to create module in the design (5%)
  2. Perform the simulation and extract the required timing diagram for at least five change in the output:
    1. Simulate the circuit and capture the timing diagram while counting up and down (15%)
    2. Simulate the circuit and capture the timing diagram while resetting the counter (15%)
    3. Simulate the circuit and capture the timing diagram for given start/stop points of 10 and 15, respectively (15%)
  3. Find an equivalent logic IC from TTL family for each component in your circuit (10%)

The report needs to be submitted as a PDF file with each section clearly specified using the numbers given in the objective section.

Assessment   2:   Simulation   of   an   analogue walkie-talkie device (L2, L3)

Problem Statement:

We want to design a simplified version of an analogue walkie-talkie. In the simplified version we are not concerned with the link establishment, and we assume that one walkie-talkie is constantly transmitting while the other one is always receiving. The device is only used for voice. It is analogue-based and uses AM modulation scheme, which means the voice is directly modulated and transferred. At the receiver, after the demodulation, the voice is detected and then played. The channel effect is ignored, and signals are not needed to be scaled to represent the correct unit and range.

Objectives:

As the designer, you need to identify the following parameters:

  1. Required bandwidth of the system (record your voice and find out the frequency representation to estimate the bandwidth) (5%)
  2. Carrier frequency of the system (refer to UK OFCOM regulation to find an available frequency band) (5%)
  3. Transmit power (refer to UK OFCOM regulation to find permissible power) (5%) 4- Create the system block diagram (main fundamental blocks with parameters are

needed in the diagram) (7%)

  1. Explain the function of each block in the diagram (8%)
  2. Create the schematic of the whole system in the simulation software:
    1. Use the correct block and wire connection (20%)
    2. Comment the schematic to explain the system (5%)
  3. Simulate the system and extract the time domain and frequency domain signals at the output of each block (25%)
  4. Introduce noise to the receiver and capture the time domain and frequency domain signals at the receiver’s output for the conditions where the standard variation of noise signal is 0.01, 0.1, 0.5, and 1 time the received signal amplitude at the receiver. (20%)
