The 18th century in America was a time of great religious revival and awakening. The First Great Awakening, which began in the 1730s, saw a significant increase in religious activity and involvement among the American colonists. This increased religious fervor led many to believe that they had a personal relationship with God and that they could experience His divine will directly. This intense personal piety helped to fuel the revolutionary spirit of the times.
Those who were involved in the revivals and Great Awakenings of the 18th century believed that they were called by God to fight for liberty and freedom. They saw the American Revolution as a way to bring about political change that would reflect their religious beliefs. Many of the Founding Fathers were influenced by these revivals and played a role in shaping the new nation.
