Expert answer

Nursing informatics is the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) in nursing with the goal of improving patient care. Health informatics is the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) in health with the goal of improving patient care. Nursing informatics is a subfield of health informatics.

Nursing informatics has been described as "the intersection of the disciplines of nursing, computer science, and information science" and "the scientific field that deals with the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of data in nursing practice." It is a relatively new field, having only emerged in the early 1990s.

The first known use of the term "nursing informatics" was in a paper presented at the 1992 American Nurses Association Conference on Nursing Informatics. The paper, titled "Nursing Informatics: An Emerging Specialty," was authored by Donna Maassel and Ruth McCorkle. In it, they defined nursing informatics as "the use of computer and information sciences to assist in meeting the information needs of nursing."

Nursing informatics has been defined in various ways, but most definitions include three key components:

* The application of computer and information sciences to nursing;

* The use of technology to support the work of nurses;

* The study of how nurses can best use technology to improve patient care.

Nursing informatics is a growing field with many opportunities for nurses. Nurses who are interested in pursuing a career in nursing informatics can find jobs in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, insurance companies, government agencies, and other healthcare organizations. There are also many opportunities for nursing informatics research.
