Why didn't the Treaty and the League of Nations work in preventing another world war?

World War I was called the war to end all wars. Humankind had never before caused such death and destruction. The Versailles treaty and the League of Nations were supposed to stop future wars but less than a generation later another world war erupted.

Expert answer

The Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations were both intended to help prevent another world war from happening. Unfortunately, neither of them was completely successful in achieving this goal.

The Treaty of Versailles placed harsh restrictions on Germany, which made the country very resentful. This resentment eventually led to the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, who used it as a rallying cry to gain support. The League of Nations, meanwhile, was hobbled by a lack of participation from major powers such as the United States and Soviet Union. Additionally, its ability to enforce its decisions was limited, as member states were unwilling to use military force to back up the League's actions.

In the end, these weaknesses proved to be too much for the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations to overcome. Hitler was able to exploit the resentment felt by many Germans to build up support for his regime. The League of Nations, meanwhile, was unable to effectively stop him. As a result, Hitler was able to lead Germany in a renewed effort to conquer Europe, which led to the outbreak of World War II.
